I really loved the first half of this: 5 stars. The prose is fantastic. And it set up an interesting situation. And I enjoyed the commentary about acting and motherhood and race. I was fascinated by how she could look at an action or a facial expression of one of the other characters and just change her whole view of the relationship. Over ascribing meaning to every little gesture. It seemed exhausting to live like that, but I was interested. Then at first I was interested in the second half - I was disoriented but excited to find out what was going on. But it lead to nothing. It got all abstract and stopped being interesting to me once I realized there was no way to reconcile everything. I loved it so much but by the end I felt like I had wasted my time.
